CTBI MEMBERSHIP ADDS VALUE
The Cape Town Boat Building and Technology Initiative (CTBi) has long been at the forefront of shaping and driving the South African boatbuilding and boating industry. Regarded as the industry’s information hub, CTBi launched a paid membership initiative in 2008, which, with over 100 members to date, has proved extremely successful.
CTBi serves as an integral facilitator between various spheres of the boatbuilding industry including those of manufacturing, exporting and labour training. Acting as such a pivotal link in the industry, it is no surprise that CTBi serves as the first point of contact for both boatbuilders and the general public alike. As well as functioning as a communications hub within the industry, CTBi also fulfills the role of a conduit between the industry and the public sector. Having tackled numerous issues with local and provincial government, CTBi constantly strives to identify and address key challenges that potentially restrict growth and development of the industry. The initiative also identifies new markets and products for the boatbuilding industry and assists in developing a proper regulatory and legislative environment.
In essence, CTBi is the voice of the South African boatbuilding industry and aims to represent the interests of its members and the sector in general. The CTBi board also discusses any changes in small craft ISO standards and is the authoritative industry voice in this regard. After tireless efforts, CTBI also recently won the tender bid for Elliot Basin in Cape Town harbour, scoring a major boost for the local boatbuilding industry, on whose behalf it will manage the facility.
CTBI also encourages and fosters development and growth with the continuing successful operation of their Boatbuilding Academy as well as the Whisper Boatbuilding Academy for deaf learners, which offer world class facilities. They also recently launched the Jumpstart programme, which is aimed at empowering entrepreneurs, as well as assisting and coaching new entrants to the Boating Industry in the Western Cape.
In addition to this, CTBi offers its members exposure via the new South African Boatbuilding Industry Guide for 2009. The publication lists its members and affiliated associations and is distributed locally and internationally. The Industry Guide was launched at the Cape Town International Boat Show, and is scheduled to be an annual publication.
